Ongoing Efforts to Address Forced Organ Harvesting

Updated: Jun 8, 2022

Stop Organ Harvesting

China Tribunal: Forced #organharvesting has been committed for years throughout China on a significant scale and Falun Gong practitioners have been one – and probably the main – source of organ supply. The concerted persecution and medical testing of the Uyghurs is more recent and it may be that evidence of forced organ harvesting of this group may emerge in due course. In June 2016, Pope Francis stated that organ trafficking and #humantrafficking for the purpose of organ removal are “true #crimesagainsthumanity [that] need to be recognized as such by all religious, political and social leaders.”

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) advises that China is running an ‘ethical organ donation system’; however, it recently became clear that the information on which the WHO’s assessment is based is provided by China. There currently exists no independent, scientific examination of China’s ambitious program of organ transplant reform. In recent years, Chinese transplant surgeons have been welcomed back into the international transplantation community based on a revolution in organ sourcing practice. A 2019 forensic analysis of Chinese data indicates the data were manufactured and manipulated from the central levels of the Chinese medical bureaucracy. The goal of these elaborate efforts appears to have been to create a misleading impression to the international transplantation community about the successes of China’s voluntary organ donation reform, and to neutralize the criticism of activists who allege that crimes against humanity have been committed in the acquisition of organs for transplant.

US: In December 2020, a bipartisan Bill entitled the ‘Stop Forced Organ Harvesting Act of 2020’ was introduced to the US legislature. This Bill was characterized as one of the most comprehensive ever introduced on the issue of trafficking in organs and human trafficking for the purpose of organ removal. It not only addresses global organ trafficking more broadly, it contributes to stopping the forced organ harvesting trade in China that claims the lives of innocent people every day. UK: The UK government has backed a cross-party amendment to the Medicines and Medical Devices Bill, which will mark the first UK legislative response to the China Tribunal Judgment. The amendment aims to protect UK medical institutions and practitioners from becoming unwittingly complicit in China’s state-sanctioned forced organ harvesting. The Bill is expected to become law in the spring 2021:

The International Coalition to End Transplant Abuse in China (ETAC) provides extensive background and additional information on forced organ harvesting.
