TRAINING

Human Trafficking Network Discovery

Our Human Trafficking Network Discovery Training educates students to recognize and monitor the criminal signatures associated with sex trafficking networks. In this course, trainees will learn to efficiently identify, map, and track organized sex trafficking groups. Whether you have been tasked to investigate human trafficking or not, if you have an interest in preventing criminal abuse of your company or have a responsibility to investigate other forms of organized crime, this training is for you. Anyone can take this course, but investigators, crime analysts, and intelligence community members will benefit most from the training we provide.

Training is offered live over two days, and upon completion, will enable trainees to discover transnational organized crime through publicly available information. By recognizing and monitoring for the criminal signatures associated with sex trafficking, law enforcement officials will learn to efficiently identify, map, and track organized sex trafficking groups in their communities.

The training includes pre- and post-knowledge assessment, how to access and utilize data, how to leverage the network-center data approach with current intelligence. The hands-on training includes practical application to ensure maximum participation and understanding. Evaluations, along with follow-up outreach, are included to ensure agencies are benefitting from the data.

Our Approach in Action

Zero Trafficking has successfully used the Human Trafficking Network Discovery course to educate agencies on the difficulties of human trafficking investigations and the effective strategies to reduce victim cooperation as discussed elsewhere in this application. Students were then able to circumvent traditional challenges associated with human trafficking investigations by focusing on criminal networks, instead of building a case reliant on sustained (and low probability) victim cooperation.

Prior to accessing this data and utilizing this approach, officers and analysts reported that they routinely saw investigations run into human trafficking activity, but lacked the ability to exploit this connection between their investigation and human trafficking. After the training, criminal analysts understood how to exploit the rich data environment to uncover criminal enterprises thus solving the problem of an overwhelming amount of indicators no one team could ever fully check. Career sworn law enforcement officers began the training highly skeptical, but after the training mentioned that no existing intelligence process at their own agencies had ever provided them anything close to what the course generated.

After successfully completing training, trainees will be able to:

  • Identify and target human trafficking networks

  • Identify criminal assets

  • Identify digital evidence (not reliant on victim testimony)

  • Identify traffickers and trafficking facilitators (instead of putative cooperative victims)

  • Use identified trafficking networks to pursue a money laundering investigation

  • Use identified trafficking networks to enrich the intelligence picture of organized crime

  • Use identified trafficking networks to exploit the intersection between criminal gangs and human trafficking.

  • Use identified trafficking networks to exploit the intersection between narcotics and human trafficking.
